Rescuers Struggled to Reach Indonesian Mine Workers Last Week - 28 Miners Killed

Mining accidents happen frequently around the world. Last week miners were trapped in a remote Indonesian mine, as hundreds of angry workers protested to demand better safety.

A report in Mining Safety magazine stated: "Freeport Indonesia, the local subsidiary of the U.S. firm, suspended all operations at Grasberg as anger grew among workers at the mine, which in recent years has suffered a major strike and a spate of deadly shootings."

The Indonesian workers were trapped by the collapse during a safety training course. The site, which is not part of the mining area, remains unstable.

Polish Worker, Who Was Seriously Injured, Saved By A Full Face Transplant

Face transplants usually require a long period of preparation.  A Polish man was injured at work on April 23 when a machine used to cut stone tore off most of his face and crushed his upper jaw.  His condition was deteriorating and it became necessary to do the face transplant quickly.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that, "The surgery reconstructed the area around the eyes, the nose, jaws and palate and other parts of the man's face. Pictures show stitches running from above the patient's right eye, under the left eye and around the face to the neck."
