Turkey: Radical Workplace Safety Reforms

Turkey's suffered 1400 workplace fatalities so far this year

Though workplace safety may not come to mind when you think of Turkey, sometimes those in the direst straits can take the biggest risks and come up with something great. Turkey has launched a rather radical new policy in an attempt to improve its distressing workplace conditions.

Dubbed the carrot-and-stick approach by Turkey's Prime minister, the reforms punish employers for accidents or reward them for good safety records. If no accident is recorded, their unemployment premiums will be decreased. If there are accidents, premiums will go up and employers could face heavy fines and even criminal charges.  >> Read the full story
